Complete translation of the four books, by Louis Ménard (1866), in an established and collated edition.

The Hermetic books were born of Alexandria, where Greeks, Egyptians and Jews crossed paths. Attributed to Hermes Trismegistus, they were written in the first centuries of our era, and held throughout the Renaissance to be the oldest wisdom in the world.

In 1866 Louis Ménard gave them their first complete French translation: the fourteen treatises, the Discourse of Initiation, the Virgin of the World, the fragments and the Definitions, preceded by a study in which he seeks their date and their place.

In it one reads the prophecy of the abandonment of Egypt, in which Ménard recognises “a supreme and sorrowful protest of expiring paganism against inevitable destiny”.
