The Bhagavad Gita is an episode of the Mahâbhârata. On the point of joining battle, Arjuna sees his teachers and his own kin facing him, and lets his bow fall. Krishna, who drives his chariot, answers him — and that answer fills eighteen chapters, from Arjuna’s anguish to deliverance.

Émile Senart, member of the Institut de France, gives a plain translation, made to be read rather than commented on. He accompanies it with a prefatory note on the transcription of Sanskrit and with an introduction in which he places the poem in the history of Hindu thought, and warns against the generalisations that distort its meaning.

The volume follows the order of the text: The Anguish of Arjuna, Speculation, Action, Knowledge and Action, Renunciation, Contemplation, The Exposition of Knowledge, Salvation in Brahman, The Royal Mystery, The Manifestations, The Vision of the Innumerable Being, Bhakti, The World of the Senses and the Spirit, The Distribution of the Three Gunas, The Supreme Spirit, Divine Destinies and Demoniac Destinies, The Threefold Faith, Renunciation and Deliverance. It closes with an index of names.

This edition establishes the 1922 text from the digital facsimile of the Bossard edition, with no modernisation of the spelling or the punctuation, and with nothing borrowed from later reissues of this translation. It is the third title in the Éditions Pongh! collection, after Hermes Trismegistus and Caillet’s Mental Treatment.
